Celebrate Mom With A Thoughtful Mother’s Day Card

Moms are a special group of people – they go above and beyond on a regular basis and they keep their families’ lives running smoothly. Moms generally deserve more recognition than they get. This Mother’s Day, make sure your mom knows how much she means to you – and how much you appreciate all the little things she does. Send her some love with a sweet card that will make her day!

Why Do We Celebrate Mother’s Day?

Mother’s Day came about through a long history of honoring mothers. In ancient times, Greeks and Romans had celebrations to honor goddesses associated with motherhood. In more modern times, the basis for a holiday celebrating mothers comes from “Mothering Sunday,” which was celebrated in the UK and other parts of Europe. This holiday was traditionally celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent, and churchgoers were encouraged to visit their “mother churches.” Over time, this became secularized, and became the basis for Mother’s Day in the UK.

In the U.S. many individuals contributed to the formation of a holiday celebrating mothers. Of note, Ann Reeves Jarvis began “Mother’s Day Work Clubs,” where she taught pre-Civil War women about properly caring for their children. Ann Reeves Jarvis passed away in 1905, at which time her daughter, Anna Jarvis, came up with the idea of selecting a day to celebrate mothers and honor the sacrifices they make for their children. She was instrumental in gaining the support of states and other institutions in establishing Mother’s Day as a national holiday, and in 1914, President Wilson established Mother’s Day as an official holiday.

When Is Mother’s Day?

Due to its many historical influences, Mother’s Day is celebrated on different days around the world. In most countries, Mother’s Day is celebrated in either March or May. In the US, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May, which this year falls on May 14, 2023. In the UK, Mother’s Day is still celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which is March 19, 2023 this year.

Who Should You Send A Mother’s Day Card To?

Because Mother’s Day is intended for honoring mothers and mother figures, there are a great many women who you may want to send a Mother’s Day card to, in addition to your mom. Consider sending a Mother’s Day card to grandmothers, great grandmothers, step-mothers, foster mothers, aunts, and other women who have had a maternal influence in your life.

You may also consider sending a Mother’s day card to women who are unrelated to you but whose motherly love you recognize. You might want to send a card to a sister, daughter, or friend who has children, or to a childless woman who demonstrates a great capacity for caring for and nurturing others.

What To Write In A Mother’s Day Card

Your relationship with your mom is unique and special, and a standard greeting card message will probably not begin to cover it. That’s why all of our cards are blank inside – because your mom will value your own words so much more than anything we could write for you.

If you struggle to put your thoughts and feelings into words, we have a few helpful suggestions for you as you start writing your Mother’s Day card. First things first: be sincere. Tell your mom what she means to you and what she does that you appreciate most. It’s okay to keep it short and sweet, but if you and your mom tend to get a little sappy, that’s alright, too – if that’s her personality, she’ll love it! Finally, make it personal. Write from the heart, and you’re sure to come up with a Mother’s Day message that your mom will love.

You can apply these suggestions to any other Mother’s Day cards you might want to write for other women in your life. The key thing is to make it personal by speaking to whatever it is that they do as a mother (or maternal figure) that makes you appreciate them on this Mother’s day.
