Thinking Of You Card Messages: Ideas For What To Write In A Thinking Of You Card

Table of Contents

Anyone who loves stationery and greeting cards will no doubt have collected some “thinking of you” cards over the years. Sometimes you need some inspiration for what to do with all those cards. Or perhaps you have a friend or loved one you know you should reach out to, but you just don’t know what to say. Either way, we have some ideas for you! Read on for inspiration for sending “thinking of you” cards for all sorts of reasons, and for example messages for all the fun, and not so fun, occasions you may have to send a “thinking of you” card.

What Is A Thinking Of You Card?

“Thinking of you” is an extremely broad category of greeting cards. Generally, a “thinking of you” card is just a card you send when you want to let someone know that they’re in your thoughts. They’re often sent when you feel that a friend or loved one could use some support or encouragement. However, they’re also great for sending spontaneously to bring joy to someone’s day.

Types Of Thinking Of You Cards

We’ve all seen greeting cards that are straightforward and say “thinking of you” right on the front. But there are a whole array of other cards that can also be used as “thinking of you” cards – they just may be for a more or less specific occasion or intention. Consider some of the following types of greeting cards when you need (or want) to send a thinking of you card:

  • Generic greeting cards: Some cards don’t have any writing on them, or they have some generic writing, like a nice quote, that can be appropriate for a broad variety of occasions. These cards make a great canvas for any type of message that you may want to send – making them a great choice to have on hand whenever you might need a “thinking of you” card.
  • “Thinking of you” and “just because” cards: Cards that say something along the lines of “thought of you today,” or “just saying hello” prime your recipient for a thoughtful note that doesn’t have to have any purpose at all. These cards are perfect when you just want to bring a little joy to someone’s day with a few kind words.
  • Encouragement cards: Cards that remind the reader that they’re strong and capable are great for sending support when someone is going through a tough time, facing a challenge, or embarking on a new adventure.
  • Get well cards: Get well cards let your recipient know that you’re hoping for a quick recovery when they’re going through an illness or recovering from an injury.
  • Sympathy cards: “Thinking of you” cards that let someone know they’re in your thoughts or prayers when they’re grieving a loss.
  • Romantic cards: Romantic cards that have generic messaging (i.e. they’re not specifically for Valentine’s day or an anniversary) can help you remind that special someone that they’re in your thoughts all the time.
  • Friendship cards: Cards with messaging that’s perfect for a friend – whether it’s because they have a nice thought or quote about friendship, or something that reminds you of an inside joke or shared story – are perfect for writing a note to tell a friend what she means to you.
  • Thank you cards:  We all (hopefully) remember to send thank you cards for big things, but thank you cards can be just as – if not more – meaningful when they’re sent to show appreciation for the small, everyday things that others do for us. Thank you cards can make great thinking of you cards when you want to tell someone that the little things they do make a difference.

Reasons To Send A Thinking Of You Card

There are as many reasons to send “thinking of you” cards as there are types of “thinking of you” cards. When you need a reason to write some notes to use up cards, consider the following.

Keep In Touch With A Friend

What better reason do you really need to send a card than that you haven’t seen a friend in a while? Sending a “thinking of you” or “just because” card when you haven’t talked in a while is a sweet gesture to show that your friendship is still important to you, even if you’ve both been a little busy.

Sending a little note in the mail can enable you to reconnect with a friend you haven’t talked to in a while. It may be the spark you need to prompt a phone call, or it can give you an opening to invite your friend to get together soon so you can catch up. A quick note can also allow you to give life updates – like notifying friends that you’re moving or starting a new job. Sending a thoughtful note can also help you stay close and connected when life takes you far away from each other. Send a thoughtful friendship card to nurture your friendship and let your friend know that she’s important to you.

Lift Someone’s Spirits

Going out to check your mail and finding a card from a friend or family member amidst the junk mail is enough to make anyone’s day a little better. When someone’s been feeling a little down, just think how much you could brighten their day by sending a cheerful note when it’s least expected. Send a “thinking of you” card with some lighthearted humor or thoughts they’ll find inspiring when you know someone is going through a tough time or may be lonely. Consider sending a loving note to an elderly friend or relative who’s homebound, someone going through a tough breakup or divorce, or someone struggling with mental health who could use a reminder that you care. A short note takes little time and effort, but could make a world of difference in their day.

Provide Encouragement

In good times and bad times, we can all use a little encouragement sometimes. A “thinking of you” card with some kind words about the good qualities you value in a friend or loved one can boost their confidence as they face all sorts of challenges. Let them know that you believe in them when they’re starting something new, or when they could just use a little encouragement to keep going. Some times when an encouragement card is perfect to send are:

  • When someone is starting a new job
  • As a student is preparing for exams
  • At the start of their sports season, or before a big game
  • After they get a promotion
  • When they didn’t get a promotion they’d hoped for
  • When someone is starting a new business endeavor

Show Appreciation

Sometimes people help us in big or small ways that have a lasting impact. It’s of course always best to send a thank you note when someone does something kind for you, but sometimes you want to recognize someone for something they did long ago that you still appreciate. Or you may want to let someone know that the little things they do routinely don’t go unnoticed, and that you don’t take them for granted. A thank you card or a thinking of you card can be a great way to spontaneously express your gratitude for the thoughtfulness and extra effort that someone puts into their work or relationships.

Send Support And Prayers During Illness Or Injury

Fighting an illness or recovering from an injury can be a lonely, scary time. Sending a get well message will be received as a thoughtful gesture whether it’s a short term recovery (such as an outpatient procedure or elective surgery), a longer term recovery (like healing from a broken bone or accident), or a prolonged illness (such as cancer). Some supportive words can let your loved one know that they are not alone as they go through their recovery and can help lift their spirits. A “thinking of you” card can also be appropriate to send to a caregiver of someone going through a long illness, such as a parent, child, or spouse – people in supportive roles need support too! Make your card extra thoughtful by offering to help with errands or chores if you can.

Acknowledge Grief And Loss

Sympathy cards may be one of the hardest kinds of “thinking of you” cards to write. Even just the small gesture of letting a loved one know that they’re in your thoughts and prayers can provide some comfort. Because so many people are uncomfortable with death and loss, the bereaved can often end up feeling very alone during their time of loss. Let them know that they’re not alone, and that you’re there for them as they grieve. Even if they do need some space for the present, let them know you’re there for them when they’re ready to talk to someone.

Say “I Love You”

Don’t just save love notes for Valentine’s day and anniversaries – surprise your special someone with a note to remind them of your feelings, just because. Taking a few minutes to write down what your significant other means to you will make their day and give them all sorts of warm fuzzy feelings. It will probably be extra meaningful because it’s unexpected.
